Are You Unsure Which Way to Go?
Perhaps becoming an illustrator has been your dream since childhood.
Perhaps you are already working professionally, but you are not getting enough assignments.
Maybe your work receives compliments and likes, but does not lead to paid opportunities.
Maybe your style feels too similar to everyone else's.
You may not know how to promote yourself, approach potential clients, or build a recognizable personal brand.
Or perhaps you are wondering how a human illustrator can continue to thrive in the age of AI.
If any of this sounds familiar, the answer may not simply be to draw better.
You may need a clearer direction.
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS helps you discover where you want to go, what makes you worth choosing, and how to build a path toward the career you want.

You Don't Need Someone Else's Map.
You Need Your Own Compass.
There are many excellent illustrators in the world.
But following someone else's path will not necessarily lead you to the career that is right for you.
The style that works for another illustrator may not work for you.
The clients they pursue may not be the clients you should pursue.
Their strengths are not your strengths.
Their destination is not your destination.
That is why ILLUSTRATION COMPASS begins with something many illustration courses overlook:
Understanding yourself.
We help you explore your interests, strengths, values, experiences, tastes, and worldview—and use them as the foundation of your work and your professional identity.
From there, you begin to chart your own course.
FIND YOUR TRUE NORTH
Clarify what kind of illustrator you want to become—and what you want to be known for.
Define your goals, your values, the work you want to create, and the kind of career you want to build.
A clear destination makes every decision that follows easier.
DEVELOP YOUR OWN VISUAL VOICE
A distinctive style cannot simply be borrowed from another artist.
Through self-exploration, visual research, creative exercises, psychology, and practical training, you will gradually discover the qualities that make your work unmistakably yours.
Find Your Position in the Illustration Market.
Become the Illustrator They Think of First.
Being good at illustration is important.
But clients also need to understand what you are especially good at—and when they should think of you.
Learn how to identify your strengths, position yourself clearly, and build a professional brand that is easier to remember.
LEARN TO NAVIGATE THE PROFESSION
A career in illustration requires much more than drawing skills.
Learn about promotion, sales, branding, client communication, project workflow, copyright, contracts, creative thinking, color, AI, and the many practical skills needed to work professionally.

More Than an Illustration Course.
A Compass for Your Career.
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS does not focus only on how to make better pictures.
It explores the larger question:
How can you build a fulfilling, sustainable life as an illustrator?
The lessons are based on three foundations:
Real-world experience
More than 20 years of professional experience in the Japanese illustration industry.
Experience supporting illustrators
Insights gained from observing, advising, and teaching more than 1,000 illustrators.
Knowledge beyond illustration
Ideas drawn from hundreds of books on creativity, psychology, goal setting, branding, marketing, business, and personal development.
These different fields have been brought together and reorganized specifically for illustrators.
The result is not a formula telling everyone to follow the same route.
It is a method designed to help you discover your route.

A Journey You Can Take From Anywhere.
Good illustration education should not depend on where you live.
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS is a subscription-based online school that you can access wherever you are.
Study at the time that works for you.
Read the lessons at your own pace.
Work through assignments when you are ready.
New lessons are added regularly, allowing your knowledge to grow step by step.
Depending on your plan, you can also receive feedback and personalized guidance on your work.
Your career does not have to follow somebody else's timetable.
Move forward at your own pace.

Why Isn't Great Illustration Always Enough to Bring Work?
Drawing skills Matters.
So Does Direction.
01
THE WORLD IS FULL OF TALENTED ILLUSTRATORS
The internet allows clients to discover illustrators from almost anywhere in the world.
That creates opportunities—but also makes it harder to stand out simply by drawing well.
02
BEING GOOD IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING REMEMBERED
A client may appreciate your work and still not know what kind of assignment to contact you about.
A strong professional identity makes that decision easier.
03
CLIENTS OFTEN WORK FROM A MENTAL SHORTLIST
When editors, designers, art directors, and other clients begin a project, certain illustrators may naturally come to mind.
The question is:
What kind of project should make them think of you?
04
CLEAR POSITIONING MAKES YOU EASIER TO REMEMBER
Your subjects, style, strengths, personality, expertise, and worldview can all become part of your professional position.
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS helps you identify and communicate those qualities.
05
AIM TO BECOME THE RIGHT ILLUSTRATOR FOR THE RIGHT PROJECT
You do not need to be the illustrator for everyone.
A stronger goal is to become the illustrator who naturally comes to mind when your kind of project appears.
That is one of the central ideas behind the branding and marketing lessons at ILLUSTRATION COMPASS.
06
A PROFESSIONAL CAREER REQUIRES MORE THAN ART
Creating the illustration is only part of the job.
Professional illustrators also need to communicate with clients, understand copyright, manage projects, present their work, promote themselves, negotiate appropriately, and adapt to changes in the industry.
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS helps you learn the whole journey—not just the drawing part.

A Different Kind of Illustration School
This school is not built around a single drawing technique or style.
It is built around a bigger question:
How can you build a long, sustainable career as an illustrator?

Your Guide on the Journey
MORI Ryuichiro
ILLUSTRATION COMPASS was created by MORI Ryuichiro, a former professional illustrator with more than 20 years of experience in the Japanese illustration industry.
He is also the founder and representative of Illustrators Tsushin, a professional illustrator network established in Japan in 2003.
Through years of working with illustrators, he has advised and supported more than 1,000 people on illustration, professional development, branding, and business strategy.
His goal is not to tell every illustrator to follow the same route.
It is to help each illustrator discover the direction that is right for them.

Stories from Illustrators Who Found Their Direction
Every illustrator begins from a different place.
Some students joined because they did not know what they needed to improve.
Some were raising children and could only study in small pockets of free time.
Some struggled to find a distinctive style.
Some had been drawing for years but did not know how to turn their work into professional opportunities.
Through the lessons and assignments, students have described discovering their strengths, clarifying the world they want to express, understanding what they need to improve, and finding a clearer direction for their careers.
Their journeys are different.
But they share something important:
They began moving forward.

You Do Not Need to See the Entire Road.
You Just Need to Know Your Direction.
No one can tell you exactly where your illustration career will lead.
And you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin.
Discover what matters to you.
Develop the work that only you can make.
Learn how the profession works.
Build a career around your strengths.
Then keep moving forward—
one lesson,
one assignment,
one project,
one step at a time.
Find Your Direction.
Build Your Own Path.
Your journey starts here.
